Physics Problem Sets at the Master's level

Lots of students look for material that will help them write examinations such as JEST/CSIR-UGC-NET etc. that are needed to gain admission to various doctoral programs in India. Surprisingly, Physics is a simple subject and there are essentially four topics that you need to master to write such examinations. They are Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics and Electromagnetism. Some may add mathematical physics to this list. Of course, these are topics that are part of every syllabus at the Master's level. I am sharing problems sets from my courses on these topics in this page so that anyone can access it. If you able to solve 50% of the problems, you are doing well.

  1. Classical Mechanics This page includes videos from my lectures that you are welcome to watch. The problem sets are also available from that page.
  2. Quantum Mechanics Page from the quantum mechanics course I taught in 2019. It includes 14 problem sets. At IIT Madras, we have a second course on quantum mechanics. Here are the QM-II assignments.
  3. Statistical Mechanics This page includes videos from my lectures that you are welcome to watch. The problem sets are also available from that page.
  4. Electromagnetism Assignments from the course I taught in 2018.
  5. Mathematical Physics This is from an undergraduate course that I taught in 2008! So it might be at a lower level than the first four topics.

I never provide solutions to the problem sets as that tends to hinder the process of learning. Quite often, I prefer to give problems which say "show that" and hence you know if you have solved the problem. Another aspect is that I break up a big problem into smaller bits that you can solve separately. Combined together, you would have solved the big problem.

If you are a faculty member, I can share the LaTeX sources files if you wish to reuse them. Some of my problem sets were taken from my colleagues — so there is no shame in using material from other people. I might even have typed out solutions for some of the problem sets. Send an email to me.
